Square 80 is a sustainable park complete with trellised seating, a solar panel and an activity lawn.
Popular among students in the warmer months, Square 80 is a testament to the university's commitment to sustainability. As part of the initiative to reduce GW's environmental impact, Square 80 demonstrates the power of sustainable architecture with entirely permeable pavement and rain gardens filled with DC's native plant life.

Single Use Plastics Ban

The Science and Engineering Hall is one of our most sustainable buildings on campus and is LEED Gold Certified. The building recycles and filters rainwater collected from the roof, houses multiple green walls filled with foliage, and is home to a rooftop greenhouse accessible to students.
♻️ Single Use Plastics Ban
GW is committed to eliminating single-use plastics from campus, and has made the following changes:
- Installation of at least one bottle-filling station (aka “hydration station”) in each building and in convenient pedestrian outdoor locations. All will be easily identified with branding for the initiative.
- All vending machines have been converted from plastic bottled beverages to canned or glass beverages, which can be recycled indefinitely.
